About Mar De Jade

“Mar de Jade is one of the great undiscovered pleasures of Mexico… A tropical setting that lifts the spirits and fires the imagination.” – San Francisco Chronicle

4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, and #1 hotel in Chacala on TripAdvisor

In 1982, Mar de Jade’s founder, Dr. Laura del Valle, and two of her siblings, packed their belongings into an old school bus and moved from bustling Mexico City to Chacala. Dr. Laura began offering free medical care to local families and soon set up a non-profit clinic in the larger nearby farming town of Las Varas. Over the 25 years she operated the clinic, it provided free services to over 14,000 families.

The spirit of service, spiritual awakening and cultivation of genuine friendships has been the driving force in the evolution of Mar de Jade. A portion of proceeds from guests’ stays at Mar de Jade support its non-profit programs, operated by MDJ Community Projects, which currently include: El Jardín, a Montessori – Waldorf inspired K – 6 school in Chacala; La Aldea, a trade school for youth who have dropped out of secondary school because of economic hardship; and El Rancho, an Organic Farm that supplies many of the products for Mar de Jade’s delicious meals.

About Chacala, Mexico

Mar de Jade sits on the shores of Playa Chacala, a small Mexican fishing village with plenty of charm that still retains a traditional way of life. It has easy access to Puerto Vallarta International Airport, just 90 minutes south, yet feels worlds apart from the big tourist developments. The town and surrounding areas have much to offer: from jungle hikes, surfing, boating and ancient petroglyphs, to the simple pleasure of playing on the soft sand and swimming in the year-round warm ocean waters.

Chacala is the most pristine and picturesque bay in the Riviera Nayarit, with golden sand, coconut trees, and palapa (thatched-roof) restaurants along the shore, surrounded by tropical jungle mountainsides. Home to approximately 400 residents, the town’s unhurried lifestyle is complemented by the welcoming and friendly attitude of locals.

Mar de Jade is a place for rest where you can unplug! They have complimentary WiFi in common areas — the dining room, guest lounge, and bar. There is no WiFi in rooms. The rural location makes for a sometimes spotty internet connection.

Reviews of the 2019 Retreat

I have felt better in my clothes and happier with my physical appearance since the retreat. Even happier to see my face in the mirror! I really only have positive things to say because I really had a great time and I felt fantastic afterward. I say keep doing your great work Carol! It works!

First off I can just say that in the days following the retreat I felt amazing!

The pounding ocean, incredible vistas and solid teaching! Carol gave corrections without sounding critical and my skills improved.

I personally love the release work and it helped transform extension in just one session

I really enjoyed the quiet and contact with nature.

It is impossible to isolate one part. I loved the beauty of the physical environment of Haramara – of meeting all these new fascinating people, the tranquility and simplicity of being disconnected from my SF life. And being so physically engaged and challenged.

I thought the melt was divine!

Hard to say what was my favorite. I LOVED Haramara Retreat center, the food was amazing, loved the twice daily classes with Carol, really enjoyed meeting everyone in the group.
